DGF-Rapeseed Oil Medal 2011/2012

[14.12.2011]

Ilse Aigner Greetings from the German Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection, Ms. Ilse Aigner

The history of Rapeseed cultivation in Germany is an instructive success story. As rape is a concrete example of how innovations in agriculture increase the quality of life of all people in our country. This is done in two ways: the introduction of new products on the one hand, and their constant improvement and optimisation on the other.

Rape made its way to us from the late middle ages. Rapeseed oil was first used in lamps and as a technical oil. The use of rape as a food product was limited for a long time due to its bitter ingredients. Thus, the cultivation of rapeseed was focussed on the technical area and even this limited application almost disappeared with the raising use of fossil oils.

It was not until the mid 1970's that it was possible to remove the undesired bitter and accompanying substances by means of plant breeding. This was the start for rapeseed as raw material for food and feed production. With the increased use of this renewable resource, rape has become a fixture among the crops in Germany. Since several years it has also served as a source of bio-energy, and thus continues to demonstrate its diverse utility.

Strikingly, in May there are entire landscapes of blooming yellow rape flowers, but rape pleases not only the eye, but also the palate. Rape, sometimes also referred to as "Olive oil of the North", impresses with its valuable ingredients. Nutritionists are convinced: Rapeseed Oil must play an increasing role as a building block of a healthy diet, for the consumer it is also essential that the taste is agreeable.

The German Society for Fat Research (DGF) each year awards the best virgin Rapeseed oil. This initiative shows results. The rapeseed oil medal is awarded to high quality native rapeseed oil, paving the way to "Haute Cuisine" as well as the kitchens of everyday people. Not only for the consumer, but also for the participants of the award 2011/2012 - Quality and taste make the difference.

Good Luck!

Introduction

[30.11.2011]

The DGF Rapeseed Oil Medal will be awarded for 2011/2012 for the 6th time by the German Society of Fat Research (DGF) for flawless virgin rapeseed oil, making it the oldest and most trusted seal of quality of this type.

Here, the DGF is in cooperation with the international gourmet-magazine "Der Feinschmecker" as press partner. Award winning oils will be sold through the magazines online shop as well as having the magazines logo placed on the winning oils. DGF is also in cooperation with the German Association of Ecotrophologists (VDOe). VDOE represents 4000 ecotrophologists and nutritionists, who are concerned with all aspects of a healthy diet and quality control.

The DGF Rapeseed Oil Medal is also aimed at smaller producers, who will be provided with an economical way in which to allow the quality of their product to be independently tested and verified.

Sensory properties are the most important factor for the evaluation of the quality of virgin rapeseed oils, since these can be perceived by consumers directly. High quality oils can be distinguished by a fresh seed-like aroma with a slightly nutty aftertaste.

Mistakes in the production or crop management have a direct negative effect on the taste of the oil. Such mistakes can often be identified in detail by experienced examiners/taste testers. On the other hand, flawless oils are a strong indicators for good manufacturing practices with high-quality raw materials. Such oils are not only tasty but also nutritionally valuable. Therefore, top chefs are increasingly using these oils in the field of fine dining.

To continue to promote this trend, it is of importance to point consumer to high-quality virgin rapeseed oils with the DGF Rapeseed Oil Medal. The oils are evaluated by a trained sensory panel and awarded in compliance with the quality criteria of the DGF Rapeseed Oil Medal. The award winners will be presented their award during a publicity event. Winners will be allowed to place the Medal on their winning oil for the duration of one year.
