8th European Symposium on Plant Lipids
2-5 July 2017, Malmö, Sweden
[updated 08.07.2016]
Dear Colleagues,
We are pleased to invite you to attend the 8th European Symposium on Plant Lipids to be held in the City of Malmö
2-5th July 2017. Malmö can be reached conveniently by train or flights to Copenhagen and then a 20 min train trip
over the bridge connecting Sweden and Denmark.
The conference will take place at Scandic Hotel in the city center of Malmö, a bustling town where Swedish traditions
are fertilized by a large number of influences from the whole world (and the home of football star Zlatan Ibrahimović).
Apart from covering most recent achievements in both basic and applied Plant Lipid Science the conference will also cover
emerging topics related to lipids that have not been much covered in previous meetings, such as the role of lipids in
plant autophagy. Apart from invited speakers introducing the different sessions, short talks will be selected from submitted
abstracts in each session. There will also be a poster session with prestigious prices for two selected posters presented
by Ph.D. students.
We are sure that you will have both a social and a scientific rewarding two and a half day in Malmö and look forward
to seeing you there.

Malmö
[updated 08.07.2016]
Malmö (280.000 inhabitants) is the third largest city in Sweden and the 6th largest in the Nordic
countries. Malmö is also the most populous city in Scania and is the economical and cultural centre of South Sweden.
Malmö is also an
important part of the transnational Öresund Region, which cover Denmark east of Great Belt (including Copenhagen) and Scania.
Malmö was one of the earliest and most industrialized towns of Scandinavia, but it struggled with the adaptation to post-industrialism.
Since the construction of the Öresund Bridge, Malmö has undergone a major transformation with architectural developments, and it has
attracted new biotech and IT companies, and particularly students through Malmö University, founded in 1998. The city contains many historic
buildings and parks, and is also a commercial centre for the western part of Scania.
Malmö, like the rest of southern Sweden, has an oceanic climate. Despite its northern location, the climate is surprisingly mild
compared to other locations in similar latitudes,
or even somewhat farther south, mainly because of the Gulf Stream. Because of its northern latitude, daylight extends 17 hours in midsummer,
The economy of Malmö was traditionally based on shipbuilding and construction related industries, such as concrete factories.
The region's leading university, along with its associated hi-tech and pharmaceutical industries, is located in Lund about 16 kilometres
to the north-east.
The main contributing factor for the city development in the last years has been the economic integration with Denmark brought
about by the Öresund Bridge. Almost 10% of the population in Malmö works in Copenhagen. Also the university founded in 1998 and the effects
of integration into the European Union have contributed.
